[TriLUG] / is /dev/root and not /dev/sda?

I'm used to doing stats on my disks by looking at the output
of df and mount. Heres my / from /etc/fstab showing that the
root fs is on /dev/sda3
/dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults 1 1
however df (and mount) says
/dev/root 9851340 461472 8889444 5% /
I'd like to programmatically know which disk my / is on
(hda, sda, sd?). How did sda3 become "root"? (I tell grub to
boot off /dev/sda3). Is there anyway to tell what disk / is
on?
Thanks Joe
