don't use an initramfs. I just boot a kernel that can read
the disk and then load modules from there. Here's my
grub_0.99 boot lines
root (hd0,2)
kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.37.6-smp root=/dev/sda3
