[TriLUG] OSS barriers to user contribution

iOS is no exception. App Store may vet out code; however, apps have not
been around the block often times. Jump to nowhere instructions rear up
their ugly little heads and cause problems. Author outsources code to
@%#$. Who are you going to call? Ghostbusters?

Of course this list can be applied to close source software.

It seems even more so to me for smart phones.
In the case of issues with Android, do you talk to the phone company,
the hardware vendor, or google?

I find it interesting to analyse the "e2fsck under cron" situation for
the underlying problems that we have in the Open Source world.

What are the barriers preventing users contributing, and how can we
reduce or remove them ?

* user frustration with poor documentation, software bugs, badly
designed code
* multitude of mailing lists, web forums, bug tracking systems
* perceived difficultly in contacting author or maintainer
* users are missing the "sense of ownership"

(And many more that I an unable to articulate clearly at this time.)
