Yes, I recently got a chance to use homebrew for a few months. It's a good
stop-gap solution. Definitely not something that a non-techie would use.
There are two major draw-backs to it. First, it's not integrated into the
OS, so it does require setup and some minimal maintenance.

Second, it doesn't appear that the packages/recipes in it are very well
curated. Debian packages, I think, are a gold standard for package quality
and maintenance. I imagine RPM repositories from Red Hat are also very high
quality, though I don't have much post 2002 experience with them. homebrew
doesn't seem to place the same level of importance on quality.

All of the above is, of course IMHO.
