In my prior job, I installed TeX on a mainframe, and set up the fonts for the large Xerox printers.
But it has been a while.
I believe a number of folks had tools for building font metric files for TeX's use from postscript and other fonts.
If you do not already know this site, please vist the following.

A great jumping off place for everything TeX. Info, downloads ....
Starting point for fonts:

Subject: [TriLUG] More on Plain TeX
Hi everyone,
I just answered one more question about Plain TeX. It's possible to nest styles like I documented in this article:
http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/lyx/lyx_latex_tex.htm#_Styles_Macros_Groups_and_Environments
Inability to do this would have stopped me cold.
The other obvious potential stumbling block is fonts. I need to be able to use Century Schoolbook and Liberation Sans and the like, not just stuff like cmbx14. Once I can use real fonts in Plain TeX, I'll be ready to do a proof of concept TeX book.
Thanks,
SteveT
