When I first started using UNIX in the late 1980s the most common reason was a keyboard unknowingly flipped into uppercase mode. But I would presume that 5 times is enough to rule that out. Sounds like the explanation that root gui login is prohibited makes more sense than a wrong password. 

Have you tried su-ing or sudo-ing as others suggested? What was the result? (Forgive me if I missed it, I did read the thread but did not notice a resolution.)
