We had an issue years ago that sounded like this.
It was a different os, but when the os was heavily used for a full backup the server would reset. The os showed no traces.
It turns out it was the firmware on the motherboard. And a number of other sites were seeing the issue.

The compile is running on the guest (CentOS 6). It will just reboot. I haven't seen any thing on the console.
I have/had top running and start a compile but even that doesn't show any major issues. I don't see memory issues for example.
