Linux Network/Systems Engineer

With a clear understanding of McClatchy Interactive’s in-house
applications, the Network/Systems Engineer is responsible for all aspects
of network and server operation, security, performance, and ongoing
improvement. Working in a fast-paced environment, the Network/Systems
Engineer must be able to work both independently and as part of the
Technology team. Consistent, detailed, and clearly written and verbal
communications are essential to this position. The Network/Systems Engineer
works closely with database administrators, software developers, and
customer support developers to plan projects, identify and solve problems,
monitor security and performance, and recommend improvements to the network
and server infrastructure and the applications that utilize networking and
server resources.

Responsibilities:

Document work through tickets and email communication.
Build solid understanding of how applications utilize network and server
infrastructure.
Organize and prioritize duties in relation to department goals.
Author documentation detailing setup and configuration.
Participate in an on-call pager rotation.
Apply engineering principles to solve existing and future problems.
Follow established procedures with minimal errors.

Qualifications:

3+ years of pertinent network and systems engineering experience is
required. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is preferred. Ideal
candidate has extensive experience working in enterprise-scale, public
Internet hosting environments. Dependable, professional demeanor, and
strong communication skills are required.

Skills:

Configuration experience with layer 1-7 network switches, routers,
firewalls, and other network gear is required. Beginning-to-end server and
network routing switch installation experience and Intermediate-Advanced
experience with root-level Linux administration are ideal. Must be
proficient in Linux/UNIX command-line and network communications protocols.
Experience with system security setup, directory services, relational
databases, and common Internet technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP,
PXE, HTTP, SSH, NNTP, NTP, SSL, SMTP, SNMP, FTP, NFS, NIS, and X11 are
preferred.
