[TriLUG] best way to hack root...

Just wondering, I installed Mint and then promptly forgot my password, how
to best guess the root password. I know its something like a few choices
but they don't match. I remember it making me put in some more complexity
but can't remember what I added. I can "su" as I have the system
auto-logging into my user account.

What's the best way to find out the password?  Is there some script where I
can give it the passwords I think and it will try things similar such as
adding a number or re-ordering letters?

Can one get to root through Grub in Mint?  It seems to skip past Grub and
hitting "e" did not work.
