You all absolutely rock. I did the grub thing...

hold shift to get grub menu
e to edit
added: single init=/bin/sh
(forgot to change grub to mount rw so had to do it manually:
mount -rw -o remount /
passwd
(enter new password twice)

reboot

Come into autologin for user. Change stuff now that I know the root
password.
