[TriLUG] 12.04 LTS GRUB Glitch

I have a multiboot PC which has Windows, kubuntu, 12.04 LTS, and 12.10 
on separate partitions. I just completed a software update on 12.04 LTS 
and on reboot I see that this update modified the GRUB menu, eliminating 
12.10 from the list (and I tried booting various list items - no 12.10). 
I can see 12.10 is found when I run "update-grub" from within 12.04 LTS 
but another reboot still lacks a menu containing 12.10.  Any ideas on 
how to restore 12.10 to the list without editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom 
(should not be necessary IMHO) ?
