I just tried this:

1) installed the system the way I wanted it
2) booted to a live Ubuntu image
3) dd'd /dev/sda3 to an external drive
4) twiddled thumbs
5) formatted /dev/sda3
6) dd'd from the external drive to /dev/sda3
7) rebooted
8) profit!

I think this will do what I want. I'll have to try the gzip option for
size, however.

Oh, I got a Knoppix CD thinking it would be faster, so I'll use that in
the future. Almost crapped my pants when the spooky spaceship countdown
lady spoke.
