Thank you both.

I will certainly exmaine these things.

However, for another data point: I can reproduce this fault at any time, under any ( apparently ) conditions, by re-enabling the function.  At the moment, I have disabled the validate function by having its caller simply return true, but if I have it go through the call, I will get the original symptom.
