I wonder if there's an open source alternative to TiVo? I checked on
Freshmeat, and there's a couple of interesting projects, but nothing that
would reproduce the functionality of TiVO.

TiVO Linux 2.1.24 Kernel Mods
http://freshmeat.net/projects/tivosoftwaresourcecode/

Web Interface to TiVO Functionality
http://freshmeat.net/projects/tivoweb/

The only other remotely related project I found was the Open Meta Archive
http://freshmeat.net/projects/oma/

Its a multimedia database that could architecturally at least act as the
repository for video.

Coming up with a solution to duplicate TiVO's functionality would conceivable
require three parts:

1. Getting the TV schedule and figuring out what to record.
2. Getting the video digitized.
3. Storing the video and playing it back (a database)

I've got a video card that has a built-in TV receiver working with Video4Lin.
If we could just figure out how to get TV schedules from the internet,
perhaps by parsing the TVGuide or Yahoo sites, then storing and playing back
the video wouldn't be such a big deal.

Thanks for all the help. I downloaded the iso files and installed
from my hard drive. I'll make sure to use the hdparm -d0 /dev/hdx
b/f mounting any cd's.

Reply-To: trilug at trilug.org

Howdy folks,

I plan on setting up a fairly complex series of firewalls with VPN soon for
a client and find that my documentation is a bit outdated. I went to B&N
and found all of their firewall books were on the pre-2.4 kernels. Does
anyone know of any good dead tree edition docs available yet for the 2.4
series firewall?

Thanks,
Chris

i'm a diehard vim junkie. all i use X windows for is running rxvt's for
vim and mozilla or konqueror. and pine. anyway, lately, i've become
dissatisfied with the fixed width font that rxvt defaults to in
mandrake-8.1. font handling in X windows has always been a murky, scary
thing that i try to avoid. can anyone help me find a better font and
configure rxvt to use it? i'd like to know how to get a list of fixed
width fonts installed on my system, how to get the font strings for them,
and if anyone has any specific font recommendations. thanks.

I haven't seen any new books, but the HOW-TO is outstanding. With the 2.4
kernel you can setup a VPN with 2 lines of code and some routing.

IMO, you should stick to using ipchains for the firewalling. I haven't
played with the iptables on a newer kernel, but the default that ships with
RH seems to have memory leaks (or other bugs).

Yes, you are very right.

The Kernel patch option is available on Mandrake 8.1 only and only if you do
an expert install. But I ended getting mad at it. So I went back to no
supermount /automount after being spoiled since 7.2 ...

You want to check the website http://www.pclinuxonline.com and the newsgroup
alt.os.linux.mandrake (linux-mandrake ??) .

They are the source of lore for Mandrake knowledge. Textar (the Texan guy
behind PCLinuxOnLine), has a FTP server where he uploads patched kernels,
special sanitized Cooker stuff and othe fun bits of Mandrakellianism (?) ,
like an speed-up version of KDE 2.2.1, really recent Kernels with
interesting patches (probably with supermount patch).

Check it out.

I remember a project called "Route 66" by Maximum Linux. they got a Linux
MP3 server/player for your car, with nifty LED screens and all kind of
goodies. IIRC, they were working on a stream-meadia server for home
(Route66++ ??), based on Route 66.

A few hacks, and you can do a [Route66++ &&Tivo mod.] == [icr]Route66(TV) ??

Hi Everyone,

I'm still riding up and down the waves of the economic downturn.

I'm a Java (4 yrs) developer (6 yrs) who once upon a time knew C/C++
(bit rusty by now). I once knew *cough* VB *cough* <duck> and Assembler.
I know Linux best, Solaris second, HPUX fourth and *cough* Windows
*cough* <duck>. I of course know the Linux "musts": shell scripting and
PERL.

Java experience includes mostly server side, EJB, JSP, Servlets, J2EE,
RMI, etc. I'm not really a graphic designer type, so my skills don't
really touch in the aesthetic arenas.

I'm good with UML. I'm working on being better. I recently took the
$1300/pop Requirements Management with Use Cases course from Rational.

I'm looking for something that at least has some hope of being stable.
I'm hoping for something more architecture based software in an
organization with a desire to produce quality. I prefer to stay busy
during business hours and will probably endlessly bug my superior for
more work in the event I don't have enough to keep me busy. On the
other hand I would like to see my family from time to time.

I'm strongly motivated and self motivated to iteratively create better
and better software.

You can catch my resume at:
www.superlinksoftware.com/cocoon/andy/resume.xml?src=lug

Additionally, if anyone has some "odd jobs" or side work available, I am
already actively engaged in that. I'm always in need of more.

If you would like code samples you can check out the POI project listed
on my taglines. This is a project hoping to become part of the Apache
Cocoon project. Once finished it will allow you to create fully styled
XLS (M$ Excel) compatible spreadsheets complete with formulas using
either the java API or XML (via a Cocoon2 Serializer.) What is there
now: POIFS of which I spec'd the requirements out for and Marc Johnson
authored, HSSF conceptual prototype - which I've written (its nearly
done with its first full iteration - already can generate/read/modify
basic XLS files). The Serializer will be started soon. Quite a few
docs and diagrams. (Excuse the format of the model, ArgoUML is not
quite baked yet and doesn't really let you structure models very nicely)

Thanks,

Andy

I'm mystified that these boxes don't just use the VCR+ system of entering
programming info. It's available in every TV Guide and newspaper TV listing
FREE (Oh, I know why--They couldn't make more money by doing it that way,
instead they chose the Microsoft way--RENT THE LISTINGS!! with a fee that
will actually make the rental fees exceed the cost of the TI-VO!! They ought
to just give the things away so they'll make even more money from the

I've noticed that all three of the various "strengths" of firewalls in
Mandrake-Linux positively prohibit newsgroup messages!! I'm approaching this
problem as a desktop user only. How do you protect your computer with a
firewall and still access newsgroups in USENET??? Or is this even possible??
I find this most curious considering the large number of LINUX newsgroups.

Theres another reason, VCR plus codes are kept a trade secret, and people
that originally figured them out in the early 90's got threatened with legal
action. Theres some pattent issues involved too. Heres some links..

Sort of answering my own question here, but the latest issue of Sys Admin

Netfiler/iptables and also lots of Kerberos stuff this month. This magazine
pays for the whole year's subscription with just one issue like this.
