Congrats on passing the ham test.
I’m also a ham, KA2DEW/Tadd I live in north Raleigh.

You can find me and all of the hams near you using the callbook database at http://www.qrz.com I’m not sure what features require a log-in, but a logged in person can search for a call sign, find a map of where they are located in clouding bearing and distance from your location, see a web page created by the ham, send a log entry to the ham stating what frequency and time you talked to them to establish a QSL contact record with them. In addition you can find all of the hams near you on the map as well as their call signs. Some hams post an email address as well. QSL records are good for qualifying for awards, like worked-all-states and dxcc. See ARRL’s web page at http://www.arrl.org
There are some other search features that let you search on a first and last name and a county so you can look for somebody you know to be a ham but for who you do not know the call sign.

There are tons of resources available for hams including clubs, at least one per county JARS, RARS, OCRA, DFMA, FCARC, Smithchart, SouthWake, Cary ARC, TEARA, plus many national clubs TAPR, AMSAT, ARRL, monitoring resources on the internet that show you where APRS beacons are located http://aprs.fi, that show propagation between areas based on fixed beacons http://aprs.mountainlake.k12.mn.us, track amateur radio satellites http://n2yo.com and predict when you can talk to them or hear them, on-line stores that sell wire, pulleys, rope, cable, connectors, radios, antennas, etc.. Each ham will have their own list of those pages. There are a couple of local stores but we are kind-of lacking a full-service ham radio store. The closest full service store that I know about is Ham Radio Outlet in Washington DC area. See www.hamradio.com.

Yahoo has a chat group for every radio manufacture and some for individual lines of radios and even for individual models of radio.

There are many peripheral groups, including TriLUG that have lots of hams in them but are not about ham radio specifically. I’m in a few of those.

There are several web sites that are crucial to any ham. http://QRZ.com is one of them. The others are http://www.eham.net, http://swap.qth.com, http://www.repeaterbook.com

Have fun!
  Tadd
