[TriLUG] Results from namebench

I have been running my own name server with BIND for some years. I started by
using a simple caching server, using my ISP and then OpenDNS and Google name
servers as forwarders, and a couple years ago to full (internal only) name
server with forward and reverse zones and using the top level "hints" file
rather than forwarders. The upside of this *for me*, is that I learned a lot
about DNS; far more than I would have otherwise. It also allows me to keep full
control over the results I get and where I get them from. It also means I have
to fix it quickly when my wife complains about being unable to get to the
Internet. ;-)

I have even found it beneficial on the rare occasion to experiment with
internally "hijacking" the results for external domains by setting my internal
name server up as authoritative for that external domain.

I have always had terrible results from the DNS servers of any of my ISP's. It
was the original impetus for me to build my own.

I felt that these experiences were far more valuable to me than fiddling with
OpenDNS configurations.
