I JUST upgraded to Jessie and am still picking up the pieces. I would
suggest NOT doing this without killing off X, your DM and anything else
running in user space. It's not a friendly lets-hold-hands session as
per Ubuntu. I'd install it fresh in the same fashion. Even more so for Sid.

Our Non-Profit has a Proxmox server running on headless wheezy. Works a
charm for me.

From what I was told, before upgrading from Wheezy that the only
difference between Jessie and Sid was that Jessie would usually be a few
days to a week behind Sid. Stuff that was broken in Sid did not go to
Jessie until the packages settled down a bit. That's my comfort zone, as
Fedora broke my heart once too often.

The User List at Debian is pretty darn good! No moderator in sight, but
everyone seems to behave friendly and top notch hands hang there with
intelligent skills to freely lend. I dumped Ubuntu, like a spouse gone
bad, when they started moderating the entire user list over the lens
debacle, when they sent your searches straight to Amazon without a kiss
my fanny.

So, I installed Wheezy cleanly. Works as well as Ubuntu ever did, and
for a server you can't beat it. For a Desktop ...it's solid but kinda
"crusty' package wise. So, if you do install Sid, you'll be fixing stuff
for me to use! I'm 63, so I'll leave all the excitement to the younger
ones. <grins> Ric
