The short story was that their previous owners had given
us a sweetheart deal many years ago.  The new owners were
unaware of the deal at first, and then once the accountants
got involved, they decided that we needed to be on a normal
(expensive) plan like everybody else.

I don't think there was any malice... they just wanted to
"fix the glitch" [1].
