I've yet to be able to find the time to /successfully/ (but I have
unsuccessfully tried!) get OS X running in VBox. I'm curious from one
who did get it running: do you know why the performance was so crappy?
My first hunch would be OS X's graphic heavy nature, which I assume it
accelerates with hardware. Without direct hardware access ...

On the same line of thought, if one were to go headless, and treat the
system as merely an ssh enabled box, would the performance be as crappy?
  For compilation purposes, for example?

That's a bummer. It's often been said that Apple is first a hardware
company, so this move makes sense, but is also frustrating, both from an
end-user flexibility and a big brother standpoint.
