[TriLUG] Vbox guest OS choices

I bought a Mac Mini in 2009 specifically for iOS development,
and it worked out great. In fact, it still does pretty good
as my kids' primary desktop computer.

But I wondered if I could make an image to run in VirtualBox,
for those times when I wanted to take OSX with me on my Linux
laptop. So like Kevin, I wasted a ton of time fiddling with
VirtualBox.

I was able to get a fresh install of Mountain Lion (10.6) to
run as a guest... for a day or so. It was no easy task. I had
to remove the power management kernel module from the install
media, because it kept hanging on my CPU. But shortly after I
got it all working, I did something or another and it reinstalled
that kernel module and toasted my experimental image. BOOM!

After that "learning experience", I just bought a MacBook... a
much better solution for me, even if it meant I'd carry two
laptops with me.

I know a guy who downloaded a hacked version of OSX to run in a
VirtualBox. It's a "modern" version, but I'm not sure if it is
Mountain Lion (10.8) or Mavericks (10.9). It's not sluggish, but
sometimes his host OS reports VirtualBox using a lot of CPU. He
can run iMessage and other online applications that require an
Apple ID. He is careful not to upgrade anything.

This crosses the line for me.

It's one thing to run a store-bought version of OSX in a VM. But
I have a real hard time with the idea of running a hacked OS that
you got off of some torrent site. I mean, come on... this thing
was specifically built by hackers! Would you trust it enough to
do ANYTHING on it? I wouldn't.

My advice... if you want to run OSX, then buy a Mac. The cheapest
Mac will run you $600 brand new.

The original poster asked something about running Windows inside
a VirtualBox. I run a Windows 7 guest at work, and I have no
problems with it... I mean, other than it being Windows.
