I am not sure about that. FreedomPop changes my IP reasonably frequently.
That may just be because I use their hotspot from multiple locations. He
could write a script that ssh's into his Linode box and updates the
iptables rule, but at that point OpenVPN already exists, and might be
easier for him to use.

Personally, I'd probably want to go with your solution with a script that
monitors my external IP, but then again, I prefer homebrew solutions that I
can control/understand. OpenVPN is a nice thing that works out of the box.
