I don't really understand this line of reasoning.
$ sudo apt-get install kalarm
Sure, it pulls in a lot of packages. But you don't manage
them. The system manages them. So this seems very simple
to me.
The place where SIMPLICITY starts to erode is when kalarm
tries to rely on the kvolumekontrol and kmixer and kdatesettings
and kfontproperties in order to configure the darned thing.
Now THAT, I can understand wanting to avoid!
