Not sure what you mean by "smart host." If you're only interested in SMTP:

Years ago, after my nth school/work/email-provider move and associated annoyance, I started paying pobox.com 20 $/yr for {email forwarding, static email address}. However, as part of that basic plan, pobox.com also provides an SMTP server, which has become nearly as valuable to me, and via which you are receiving this email. (pobox also provides NNTP, IIRC, but I haven't used that in awhile.)

IMHO pobox.com is stable, reliable, and reasonably-priced. It also allows me to

on the backend without being publicly at gmail.com , which would annoy if (e.g.) Google went payware or became less not-evil than they are now. OTOH, pobox.com could become !!evil. Ya never know (unless you're the NSA :-)
