A good antenna is where I would start. If possible (don't know how to do
this easily in Windows land), I'd measure the signal strength before &
after. On Linux I've used wavemon for this.

For my previous setup I bought a nice ath9k-based Wi-Fi PCI card + external
antennas that had 5 foot cords. This helped quite a bit, and I could
reposition them as needed.
