I periodically post some on http://danielle-white.info/blog/ but that's
a catch-all personal blog; I'll be moving the tech-related bits (which
include some on mentoring) to http://danielle.guru in the near (ish) future.
Additionally, I want to second Cristóbal. Most of my work is on Linux,
typically RHEL 5 or 6, with some Windows (clients on a terminal server)
plus occasional work on Solaris and, rarely, AIX. The "read the source"
answer, while appealing to me on certain levels, simply won't fit my
employer's business model. They are paying me to be able to effectively
install, administer, troubleshoot, etc., their software for our hosted
customers, along with some other products from third parties, e.g. I
have a Cloudera Hadoop install coming up, and the FOSS pieces are often
incidental. The work I do with FOSS tools is important but, ultimately,
incidental to my real work, such as when I recently wrote a script to
automate standard adjustments to memory settings of Java web containers
as part of our post-install (shell script with sed commands, most of
which I knew already but a couple bits I had to look up.) The key is
being able to get answers fast. With the mentorship angle, it's also
about being able to help my junior admins likewise find those answers.
Regards,
Danielle
