you've got a couple of answers at various levels of complexity. I am low tech,
so keeping an eye on everything is not as sophisticated as Alan's setup.
I have two 2-bay external USB enclosures on one of my boxes, currently upgrading
to 4TB disks. I just rsync everything to them.
I used to have multiclient. Anytime a machine came on the net, I `cp -auv` from
it using smbmount. Those machines have all left the house now.
If you want remote connectivity, use OpenVPN. It gets you to everything at home,
not just the NAS.
