Thank you all for your help. Very informative and helpful.

Using cut and sed will get just the date out of the file in this format
YYYYmmdd, and for all it's worth comparing two dates in that format seems
to work. If this for some reason fails at some point, I'll look at
converting to epoch to compare.

So now I'll move on to encrypting the files and then sending them to
archive storage.
