If you like, you can just install nano rather than learn vim.
  sudo apt-get install nano

If that fails because your networking manager requires you graphical
login, then it's a little more tricky. You will have to download the
nano*.deb file from Mint and transfer it via a usb flash stick to your
laptop. Then run:
  sudo dpkg -i nano*.deb

If you go with vim, you will need to learn how to edit and use command
mode, etc.
