+1 on Python 
The Sugar linux distribution by sugar labs used python as a learning platform. I think the interpretive environment makes a great learning tool to uncomplicate the compiling issues that really are not necessary to learn programming is a great path. On top of that, Python is exploding as a programming language and I have seen it mentioned in plenty of job descriptions. 
In Short, Python is easy to learn and powerful enough for growth. I do not see BASIC having this advantage.
