Gentoo is like "Linux from Scratch with moderate assistance".  You are
encouraged to use Portage or Paludis for package management, and
there's a general decided upon structure for where to put files (e.g.
in /etc).

I would recommend Gentoo if you want to customise your entire system,
including the kernel.  You are guaranteed to learn a lot about how a
Linux operating system is put together in the process of using Gentoo.
