I've had really good luck running Debian with ZFSonLinux
<http://zfsonlinux.org/>. We share over NFS and SMB.
You can get 8 4TiB drives in this Norco 4U box
<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219051>, giving
you "RAID" Z2 with 24Tib and 2-drive fault-tolerance.

If you're gong to run ZFS, a cheap core i3 will be fine, but definitely go
with 16GiB of RAM.
