Even new stuff is cheap these days. A RasPi 2 has a quad-core 900MHz CPU and 1 GB of memory, and everything-included-but-RAM Atom-based mini-ITX boards are great. I ran one as a NAS for years and only traded up when I wanted it to transcode HD video all the time. In terms of foundational Linux as opposed to desktop stuff, it’s often all you need.
