[TriLUG] have a job, need a job

Hi guys,

Two years ago, I stood up in front of the group, showing off my shiny
new Oracle employee badge and asked if any of you could help me get rid
of it.

Soon after, I did find a new gig at Lancope, an established network
security company with a small start-up "cloud team" here in the
Triangle. We had a good run for a year... we made a proof-of-concept
cloud-based security monitor, and I learned a lot along the way. I got
to work on everything from our Linux-based network VM appliance to our
back end REST server to our Angular web UI to our cloud deployment system.

Now that is what I call "FULL stack development".

Call me lucky, but Lancope caught the attention of Cisco, and now I have
a shiny new Cisco employee badge! Don't get me wrong -- if you're going
to be acquired by a big company, Cisco is a hundred times better than
Oracle. At least people don't pity you when you tell them where you work!

But in the process of being acquired, our start-up project has been
moth-balled, and we're now just a part of another larger Lancope/Cisco
project. All of the stuff that was appealing about working for the
small autonomous start-up team has sort of dried up. There's still work
to do, but it's not what I was looking for when I left Tekelec/Oracle.

So again, I ask the crowd if they know of any cool projects that could
use a Linux hacker like me. Although I've done embedded systems and
device drivers and even made internet-connected ovens, these days I tend
to lean more towards full stack web development, a little stronger on
the back end than on the front. The reason I like smaller projects is
that you get to work on both, and then some.

Or... if you're hoping to find a talisman to effect a corporate takeover
of your company, apparently I have a knack for that, too!

Either way, look me up at http://AlanPorter.com/ . You'll find my
resume and a bunch of other rubbish there.

Thanks for listening. See y'all at The Frontier on Thursday night.

Alan
