[TriLUG] Google Fiber Triangle Build out

Google is trying to treat stretch marks right now. They grew to fast with pie in the sky ideas and while I for one greatly appreciate their efforts. Reality is setting in and the change to the name Alphabet was just the way to restructure the company to control the spending on these crazy projects, which do in fact create great technology, but at what cost is the question. Specific to the Fiber project, you could say they accomplished the goal of better bandwidth as the REAL ISP's were scared to death of Google Fiber and responded quickly. I am not at all surprised at the outcome. We are jumping in on a big fiber project as well, and it is taking a longer than we planned too. These are big projects and there is nothing easy about it. There is a reason the BIG ISP/Telecoms have held on so tight. They already have the networks and it took decades to build them.
I am still rooting for Google Fiber, but there is no way I am signing up for last mile wireless.

To me, the article seems to indicate that new rollouts have been
suspended but the ones already in progress (like the Triangle) are
continuing.

I sure hope so, anyway.  Ever since Google Fiber was announced here I
have been looking forward to having fiber Internet, and it would be a
shame to have it replaced with a WISP at the last minute.

Wireless may be cheaper, but it has more than its fair share of
disadvantages like limited spectrum, limited range at the frequencies
required to achieve high data rates, low signal penetration at the
frequencies required to achieve high data rates, EMI/RFI, reliability
(because of the low range at the high frequency, many base stations will
be required, increasing the possibility of single-point failures),
backup power (if the backhaul is fiber, each individual base station
will need its own power and backup power sources), and backhaul in
general (with the low range and many required base stations, they would
still end up having to put in a bunch of fiber anyway).

In short, if Google Fiber does switch to wireless in the Triangle, I
will probably just stick with TWC/Charter Spectrum.
