[TriLUG] Remote Desktop

Once or twice a week I need to access another Linux machine from mine in order to run a report -- they are on the same network. The whole process takes about a minute. I do not need to access it from outside the building. (I just don't feel like walking down 4 flights of stairs whenever I need to create the file.) I've looked at RealVNC and while it certainly would do what I need, it just seems like overkill. If I have the other unit set up as the "server" with me as the "client" the "server" must be always running. On the occasions I need to access the unit there is no one at it to start some process for me. Everything must take place without human intervention.

Thoughts on this?
