Sorry to hear you're having such a negative experience with Amazon.  I
have heard from others that they are a real pain in the backside
sometimes.

Linode does not have the training wheels as you put it.  It's an open
box that you can configure as you wish.  They do have an SSH backdoork
system called Lish to get in should you accidentally lock yourself out,
which is helpful since you don't have physical access to the box.

All the ports are open, including ICMP (I just pinged my Linode to
verify) and you get a static, public IP address.  

The amount of data transfer you get is very large and I don't believe
that inbound traffic counts against that.  

Give them a try, I think you will be happy with them.
