[TriLUG] So here is a thought

The 1200mm to 2000mm wingspan planes will be a good start for autonomous
flight. For a flight controller, APM has many cheap clones on Amazon (I
own one). These kits will come with 900mhz 3DR radios that can push/pull
commands/telem to and from a laptop or Android phone with OTAG. Mavlink
software can be used on nearly all operating systems to interface with the
aircraft via UI. My talk on geospatial indexes that uses one of my planes
and this hardware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quwiciz6YTY&t=1164s
Bumping up slightly in price and stability is the Pixhawk and purchasing
hardware directly from 3DR - unfortunately they appear to be getting out of
the DIY game that they were once known for.
Dennis Baldwin (https://www.youtube.com/user/dennisbaldwin/videos) Has
great videos on how this works. He also does a lot with aerial mapping.
If I'm purchasing rather than building, Ready Made RC is where I go. This
SkyHunter has a lot of power and can fly a big payload.

After typing all of that.... If you are just starting out in the RC hobby
then the aboe is more advanced level stuff. Start with a smaller plane (or
even a simulator). You have a lot to learn about motors, ESCs, radios,
batteries, control surfaces, propeller pitch and more. Checkout the
YoutTube channel 'FlightTest' and be prepared to lose track of money and
time. You are going to crash often when starting out but that is ok... we
all do. Building like FlightTest allows you to get in on the cheap and
learn every detail.
