Does it actually get an empty authoritative response, an NXDOMAIN failure,
or a time out? dig output would be idea.

Hi gang,
Lately I've been very disappointed with the dynamic DNS I've been getting
from dynip, a Canadian company. At least once a day, a script of mine that
runs every 5 minutes gets an empty response to a lookup from one of their
nameservers.
I managed to get through to their tech support folks (which wasn't
easy...their own support e-mail system was also broken...), and their
response was "the names[sic] servers are reloaded approx every 10 minutes
so it is possible to issue a query to a specific server and not get a
response as the zones are reloading."
All my script does is "dig +short cheetah.dynip.com A", so the "specific
server" is whatever the resolver decided to use to get the answer.
Is this just an unavoidable window-of-opportunity thing, or should I be
irritated? Anecdotally, I have yet to observe a failure when checking
dynamic DNS records hosted by Hurricane Electric...
