Interesting idea that at first blush sounds quite plausible, thank you.
 I see that there are tools that will create a .VHD (virtual hard
drive) from an existing windows installation and these can be mounted
on an external hard drive (perfect).  I assume then a program like
VirtualBox would be able to mount and run this?

I was also reading that I would want to check the BIOS settings in the
PC to see if it has any virtualization hardware (would be surprised if
it doesn't).  

At the risk of having to turn in my "geek card", I have to admit that I
haven't created or run any virtualized systems yet.
