One thing we did was group/sort by domain name. This may be non-obvious at
first but sendmail /chunks/ emails destined to that many addresses into
groups of 50 recipients(email envelope addresses not “to:” addresses) for
queuing purposes. If 50 of the emails were going to yahoo.com, for example,
instead of 50 emails transferred to yahoo servers only 1-2 emails would be
transferred and look like less of a blast/burst of email.

Not sure if something like that is do-able in-the-cloud/Gmail. . .
