For many years, Steven Hawking depended upon a voice synthesizer to
communicate. The speech synthesizer, a CallText 5010, harked back to the 1980s
and was last upgraded in 1986.

The robotic sounding voice became part of Hawking. It was his voice. In later
years, efforts were made to move to more modern platforms, including
emulations on PCs. Hawking stayed with his CallText voice - it was "him."

Many computer experts continued efforts to emulate the old CallText robotic
voice and finally pleased Hawking with a prototype running on Linux on a
Raspberry Pi! He liked it. And, Hawking's voice has been saved for the future.

Paraphrased from an article in TheWeek Magazine, "Saving Hawking's Voice," May
4, 2018, which was, in turn, based on an article in the San Francisco Chronicle

(Please excuse cross-posting, done in the interest of passing this on to a
wider audience of Linux enthusiasts.)
