GIMP does have a feature to limit what one captures. In the menu, do the
following:

  * File | Create | Screenshot
  * Choose Select a region to grab
  * Introduce a delay to enable switching the focus to the application that
    you want to capture
  * After the time delay, a cross-hair appears
  * Move the cross-hair to a corner of the region to be selected
  * Hold down the left mouse button and drag to the opposite corner
  * Release the mouse button and the selected area will appear as a new image
    in The GIMP.
  * I sometimes have to crop it a little bit, especially on irregular areas
    that I'm trying to select to get rid of the extraneous stuff in the margins.

It takes longer to describe that it does to execute. If one leave the default,
Take a screenshot of a single window, the image is limited to the window with
the focus rather than the whole of what's seen on one's monitor. I still
introduce a delay to make sure something is not overlaying the area of interest.

FWIW: this also works in the other OS that is unmentionable.

(I'm used to a Windows application that lets me do that.) Seems to me I read something that this might not actually be possible in Linux. Anyone know different?
