Where I live in North Chatham County, flat panel antennas and other
cheapies from regular stores are not good enough.

Most of our local Triangle stations are broadcast out of Southeast Raleigh,
almost in Garner.  I am in a "nether-region" between the
Greensboro/Winston-Salem stations and the Raleigh towers.

(With the notable exception of WUNC-TV PBS, which I can see from my house!
Any cheapo antenna will get that station. ...and it's one of the country's
best public TV stations!)

You need a nice antenna like this one:

Finally, you could add a low-pass filter to get rid of interference like

(many have said this isn't necessary, but it could help)

As far as MythTV, I had a really cool setup that lets me record digitally
directly from Dish Network without transcoding.  Due to a flaw in the older
VIP211 STBs (not the black VIP211k units), the digital stream is
unprotected at one point in the video path, allowing you to directly grab
it.  These are pure transport streams in MPEG4, and they look really good.

I don't have a TV service anymore, but I have both boxes.  If anyone is
interested in them, let me know.
