[TriLUG] ATT convert pop to imap

I went through this exercise awhile back, in Tburd. As I recall,

Clean house. Remove cruft - emails no longer needed. Empty trash.

Save a copy of /home/.thunderbird for recovery from a screw up.

Create a new, temp folder(s). Copy all incoming and saved to new folder(s). Undeleted mail should stay on the server.

Delete the original (pop) account. Create a NEW account but set it up as IMAP. Avail on server should start downloading. Copy temporarily saved folders into the new account. Folders from the old, incoming folder, will sync back to the server. BE PATIENT as this takes awhile.

When done, delete the temp folders.

Good ruck.

This is a lot of work, but once you do it, you'll be glad for the rest
of your life.

I created a Dovecot IMAP server right on my Daily Driver Desktop (DDD).
I use fetchmail to grab from servers (like bellsouth's POP), run it
through procmail to ring-toss into mail folders on the Dovecot IMAP
server's maildir, and then, at any time, I can look at the emails on my
Dovecot with any fully IMAP-respecting email client I want. Claws-mail
is a good one because it's not a bloated pig like Thunderbird.
