[TriLUG] Running a home machine, not a server with processes exposed to the web, as long as you keep things up to date and don't go to sketchy places and download programs from untrusted sources, your risk is likely very low. As s safety measure use a decent hardware firewall and then run a software firewall like iptables or equivalent as a belt and suspenders.
