I'm not quite sure what to tell you. I literally did a webapp upgrade minutes ago in the manner I described... script inside a tmux session.

We would need more info to know why you got the result you did. What is the output of 'env' both before you call script and once you're inside the script? Once inside script, are you able to touch a file? Echo to that file? Cat that file? Once you exit, the file should still be there.
