Sorry my tail of woe may have triggered bad memories.
In defense of firmware updates, I will say my time in the storage device
business left me with a different set of opinions on firmware updates. The
latest firmware can turn a really buggy SSD into a solid storage device
(pun intended). Some of the early firmware on even high end, brand name
SSDs can be a real mess to say the least. It does get better with time
(and SEV 1 style Stop-Ship orders!) I have lived through several of
those. You can check your FW level against current and you are probably OK
if you are fairly close to current. But if you have something that is
closer to initial ship time, you might have a time bomb on your hands.
I realize that BIOS/UEFi updates are a completely different beast.
