I think the only way that would be more than marginally useful, would be
if you were going to be a distro-builder.
Like the times I had to build the kernel in RH classes, it was
interesting but I'll never use it in real life unless I become a kernel
developer.
However!! If you're just curious about it and you want to do it because
you think it would be cool and fun -- then yes go for it! I learn more
from following my curiosity than any other way, and I have more fun as
well.
