Tangent!

Granted, packaged things are always getting better and generally catch 
up to bleeding-edge hardware pretty quickly, but anecdotally there is 
some utility to being familiar with (or, at least, not afraid of) the 
kernel configuration and build process.  I ran a custom kernel on my 
daily-driver for some time while waiting for the upstream maintainers to 
build support for USB-3 in its earlier days.  Customizing a kernel on an 
embedded platform such as Raspberry Pi can also be quite handy when you 
want to maximize a certain area of performance.  I think every serious 
Linux power-user should build a kernel at least once! :-)
