Have you checked for resource exhaustion?  E.g., file system at 100% 
(run "df -k"), out-of-memory (OOM) complaints (run "dmesg").  Also check 
other logs - often /var/log/messages.  I don't know what's communicating 
between your e-mail reader and Firefox, but if something like dbus, that 
might need to be restarted - which might be logout and login, or a 
reboot.  I apologize if these steps are insultingly basic, but I don't 
know your level of sophistication.
